Louis Vuitton lived at an amazing time for fashion, the end of the 19th century, which saw the birth of haute couture. Charles Frederick Worth had just opened his Paris fashion house, creating high fashion as we know it; Louis Vuitton was crafting luxury trunks in a workshop nearby. Meanwhile, the British couturier Lucille had already opened a fashion atelier in London.
